The name of the two hills mainly comes from their location on the hills along with their respective names. Two mountains are literally standing opposite each other.
Udayagiri popularly known as Suryodaya Pahari has 18 caves, while Khandagiri has 15 caves.
They are believed to have been built as residential accommodation for Jain monks during the reign of King Kharavela.
These caves mix between religious and historical relevance in their time with deities and idols of different gods.
